UAE- Diabetes campaign at The Souq

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  The HealthPlus and Aldar Properties have launched a joint diabetes awareness campaign at The Souq (the rebuilt Old Souq) for visitors and nearby residents. The initiative, according to organisers, follows a series of campaigns and health talks that HealthPlus and Aldar organised during the year 2012. "We are pleased to be organising this community diabetes awareness event in partnership with HealthPlus and Abu Dhabi's Business Women Council," said Andrew Broderick, Aldar's health, safety and environment manager. According to him, the recent diabetes check-up campaign at the Souq attracted more than 500 people, majority of whom were low-income labourers. "It was great to see such an excellent turnout from the community at The Souq â€" World Trade Centre, Abu Dhabi, and we look forward to organising more such activities as part of our shared commitment to community health and social responsibility," he added Studies have shown that in recent years, a rise in Type 2 diabetes across all age groups was evident worldwide. Official statistics show that the UAE is ranked 11th worldwide, with 18.9 per cent of the UAE population living with diabetes. Lectures were given in both English and Arabic and were presented by Abu Dhabi's leading diabetes consultants, Dr Mohammed Al Khatib and Dr Thomas Kunt, who focused their talks on how to keep the whole family away from diabetes, starting from childhood. They also discussed the dangers of the disease and gave tips on how to prevent it. Attendees were then invited to a free health check-up by the HealthPlus medical team including Body Mass Index, blood sugar and blood pressure.
