UAE- Scrabble to improve Arabic writing skills of students

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  In a bid to improve the Arabic writing skills of students, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) will introduce Arabic Scrabble to Grade 6 students across the public schools in the emirate for the next academic year as an extra-curricular learning resource. The project comes in line with the Adec's strategy to enhance the learning and teaching of Arabic, improve student vocabulary and writing skills and increase student motivation. The pilot phase was implemented in six schools during the second and third trimesters this year. "The Adec will roll out the scrabble project among Grade 6 students to coincide with the implementation of the new school model in the same grade next year and the project will be expanded to include Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 schools at a later phase," said Adec's Curriculum Division manager Dr Karima Al Mazroui. She said the project aimed to enable students to acquire new vocabulary which would improve their written skills and oral performance, build new words correctly, develop literacy skills, enhance student attachment to their mother tongue and take pride in Arabic. During the pilot phase, student participants underwent two assessments - one prior to playing the game and the other after months of practice to measure the impact of the game in their writing skills. The outcomes showed improvement in writing skills and vocabulary for most of the students when compared with their peers who did not take part.
