UAE- Two drug traffickers held


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  Police authorities in Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah and the federal anti-drug unit at the Ministry of Interior, in a joint operation, arrested two persons from Sharjah on June 5, and seized 5,000 psychedelic pills as well as hashish that the duo had allegedly smuggled from an Asian country. One of the suspects is an Emirati, while the other is from the Republic of Comoros. Major-General Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department of the Dubai Police, praised the police teams that participated in the joint operation named "Al-Zubair" in Sharjah. He said the General Department of Anti-Narcotics of the Dubai Police received intelligence about the two suspects who were involved in drug trafficking and peddling, targeting youngsters to whom the defendants distributed drugs, free of cost, with the intention of making them addicted. He described the arrest of the duo as a quality operation that involved the highest level of planning and coordination between the police authorities. On being tipped off about the pair, the police authorities formed a joint team and started monitoring the movements of the suspects. The duo were arrested in an ambush by the police teams around 1am in Sharjah's Zubair area. On searching their car, the police found a large quantity of drugs that the pair had smuggled from an Asian country. Maj-Gen Mahdi said the Emirati suspect, identified as P.M., 31, was found to have been involved in two cases of smuggling and promotion of drugs in Dubai and Sharjah, in 2009 and 2011, respectively. The 21-year-old Comoros suspect was a high school student, and had a previous record of causing a serious traffic accident while driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Stressing the determination of combating drugs in the country, under the umbrella of the Ministry of Interior, Maj-Gen Mahdi said the authorities will continue tracking, chasing, and prosecuting all those involved in evil activities related to drug smuggling and promotion.
