UAE- Trio on trial over clerk's kidnap for ransom

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  Three men, with accomplices at large, allegedly kidnapped a clerk for a Dh30,000 ransom after intruding into his house at Abu Hail in Muraqqabat at night and assaulting him, a court heard on Tuesday. The three Indian defendants then allegedly imprisoned the worker and his friend in a traditional Arabic house in Ras Al Khaimah. One of the accused, who are aged between 23 and 29 years, intimidated the victim by posing as a police officer. They also stole their mobile phones. The trio have been charged in the Court of First Instance with kidnap, illegal imprisonment and forcible robbery at night. The incident allegedly happened in December 11 last year. The clerk, a Pakistani, said the defendants barged into his place in Hor Al Anz around 2am and asked about his former roommate. "One of them kept saying he was a CID officer and showed me hastily a card," he told the prosecutor. The clerk said the man who posed as a policeman also slapped him on his face. They all kicked and punched him when they learnt that he was in charge of the house. They told the clerk that they had paid his ex-roommate a sum of money to buy them a car but he never delivered. They kept assaulting him even after he told them that he was not the person they wanted and that he did not have anything to do with the matter. They dragged him by force into their car and made him sit in the back seat. They wanted him to lead them to that person as they thought he was lying to them. They took his friend along upon his request as he felt scared. They took them to a house in Ras Al Khaimah where they locked them up in a room for 24 hours. The clerk told his 'kidnappers' that he would pay them Dh24,000 if they let his friend go and they agreed. The police arrested the main accused from Bur Dubai when he went to collect the money from the clerk's friend. The other accused were arrested later when they dropped the clerk, who had agreed to drop the charges against them, at the police station. A police sergeant confirmed during investigation that the kidnap was reported on December 12 last year. They learnt later that one of the defendants would meet the clerk's friend near a restaurant in Hor Al Anz to collect Dh24,000. The police arrested him in a sting operation. He was very agitated and scared.
